More than 100 members of the Class of 2013 visited the School of Pharmacy on June 5 for its annual New Student Welcome Day, at which the new student pharmacists were given an introduction to the School, student life, the curriculum, and other relevant areas.
In welcoming the new students, David Roffman, PharmD, associate dean for academic affairs congratulated the group on being admitted to one of the top 10 schools of pharmacy in the country. “Our admissions process is rigorous, and we pride ourselves on the fact that our students add something of value to our School,” he said. “You are here because you worked hard.”
Roffman informed the group that they are one of the first classes that will complete its education in the new Pharmacy Hall Addition, slated to open in the fall of 2010. This group will also benefit from a revised curriculum being introduced when the academic year begins in late August. “We will be teaching you to be a pharmacist for the future,” he said.
Chai Wang, Class of 2011 and president of the School’s Student Government Association, encouraged the new students to get involved in the more than 20 student organizations active at the School. He advised them to “study, manage your time wisely and make yourself available for your peers.”
The new students also heard from their class advisor, Kristin Watson, PharmD, an assistant professor of pharmacy practice and science, were fitted for their white coats and given tours of the Baltimore and Shady Grove campuses.
All 160 members of the Class of 2013 will attend new student orientation at the School August 19-21.
