The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy hosted its annual New Student Welcome Day for members of its Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Class of 2023 on June 7. Featuring a selection of activities designed to introduce new students to the curriculum and set expectations for the first year as student pharmacists, the event provided students with an opportunity to learn more about the School and meet their fellow classmates for the first time.

“Life as a student pharmacist will be different than what you experienced as an undergraduate student,” said Cherokee Layson-Wolf, PharmD, BCACP, FAPhA, associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science (PPS) and associate dean for student affairs at the School of Pharmacy. “New Student Welcome Day is our chance to share important information that will help make sure you start your first semester on the right foot.”

“Faculty at the School are here to help open the doors for you, but it will be up to you to walk through those doors,” added Paul Shapiro, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PSC), who will serve as class advisor for the PharmD Class of 2023. “You will need to take ownership of your education.”

Incoming students who attended New Student Welcome Day received valuable information about an array of topics, including financial aid and upcoming coursework. They also had an opportunity to be sized for their white coats, which they will don for the first time during the School’s annual White Coat Ceremony in September, as well as participate in an interactive student panel discussion that offered additional insights about classes, student life, and life in Baltimore from the individuals most familiar with those topics – current students.

“The faculty and staff at the School of Pharmacy who organized New Student Welcome Day did an excellent job,” said Sania Ali, an incoming member of the PharmD Class of 2023. “The event was truly tailored to meet each student’s needs and answer any questions that we might have, which was great, because not everyone had questions about the same topic.”

Alexandra Morris, another incoming member of the PharmD Class of 2023, added, “We learned a lot of new information that will be really important to ensuring our success this fall.”

The School of Pharmacy looks forward to welcoming back the PharmD Class of 2023 in August for New Student Orientation. To see more highlights from New Student Welcome Day, please view the video below.
