More than 26 teams participated in the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity’s 7th Annual Wing-A-Thon, benefiting the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC), April 15 at the Southern Management Corporation Campus Center.
The student-organized event was led by the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy’s Sigma Chapter of the Kappa Psi Fraternity and co-sponsored by the School’s Student Government Association and the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s University Student Government Association.
Students from the University’s Schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Law, Dental, Nursing, and the Graduate School, as well as local businesses and nearby universities, dressed in custom-made uniforms and assembled into teams of five in a race to devour the most wings and raise the most money for UMGCC.
“Wing-A-Thon is one of the highlights of our school year! It’s always great to see classmates and strangers alike unite to raise money for a great cause. This year the energy was contagious and you knew that the competition would be fierce from the moment that you saw the teams in costumes and t-shirts. I especially enjoyed watching the teams and their cheering sections dancing and shouting out encouraging words,” said Janet Lee, PharmD student, Class of 2013.The friendly, yet highly competitive wing-a-thon raised more than $5,600 through team sponsorships, donations, and raffle prizes. Donated prizes included several gift certificates from local restaurants and merchants, a lunch cruise for two around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor from Spirit Cruise, and an autographed hockey puck from the Washington Capitals.
The competition’s finalists were “Chaiwallas” from the University of Shenandoah School of Pharmacy, “Spicy Fowl Movement” from the University of Maryland School of Law, “Just Eat It” from the University of Maryland Dental School, and last year’s champions “Fail, Fail, Fail” from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. This year’s winner was “Just Eat It,” who graciously donated their cash prize to the UMGCC.
One hundred percent of the proceeds collected were donated to the UMGCC.
