Pharmacy Law Group Elects School of Pharmacy’s Palumbo Next President

American Society for Pharmacy Law helps educate pharmacist-attorneys, pharmacists, attorneys and other interested parties on legal issues affecting pharmacy

Frank Palumbo, PhD, JD, a professor of pharmaceutical health services research at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, has been named president-elect of the American Society for Pharmacy Law (ASPL).

“We are delighted to have him back where he has previously served for several years on our board and committees,” said Nathela Chatara, executive director of the society, which is based in Springfield, Ill. “[Palumbo] is a good choice because he has been involved with ASPL for many years and brings an academic perspective to what we are involved with.” Chatara said the group’s membership is a mixture of pharmacists, attorneys, and academicians.

Originally from Scranton, Pa., Palumbo received his BS in pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina, and he received an MS and a PhD in Health Care Administration from the University of Mississippi. He received a JD from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He practiced food and drug law during his sabbatical year at Hyman, Phelps and McNamara in Washington, DC.

Palumbo is executive director of the Center on Drugs and Public Policy at the School of Pharmacy. In addition to his research, teaching and administration at the School of Pharmacy, he also serves as an adjunct professor in UMB’s School of Law, where he teaches food and drug law.

“Dr. Palumbo has long been a nationally recognized expert in the area of pharmacy law and policy. We are privileged to have the next president of ASPL as a member of our faculty in the Pharmaceutical Health Services Research Department,” said Ilene Zuckerman, PharmD, PhD, professor and chair of the department.
