The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy’s student chapters of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) and Student Section of Maryland Public Health Association (SMdPHA) hosted a 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament, on Nov 11, at the Pratt Gym in the Southern Management Corporation Campus Center. Twelve teams participated with students representing the six professional schools at the University of Maryland, including the Schools of Pharmacy, Law, Medicine, Social Work, Nursing, and the Dental School.

Money raised at the tournament from registration fees and sponsorships will benefit the American Heart Association (AHA). The past two semesters, AMCP along with the SMdPHA and the American Pharmacist Association (APhA) Operation Heart have raised more than $1,000 for the AHA from competitive soccer and basketball tournaments.

“This continued fundraising effort shows the unwavering commitment of our AMCP chapter to increasing awareness of the devastating impact of cardiovascular diseases in our communities while promoting healthy life styles on our campus. We look forward to continuing the tradition by organizing a a soccer tournament in the spring semester which will be open to students from all schools on campus,” said Christian Talla, president of AMCP and a third year student pharmacist.

First place was awarded to Albert Salameh (Pharmacy, Class of 2012), Thomas Bushell (Pharmacy, Class of 2012), Paul Goleb (Medicine), and Shomari Taylor (Law).
