Alexander D. MacKerell Jr., PhD, has been appointed the first Grollman-Glick Professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. MacKerell is an internationally recognized scholar on theoretical approaches to understanding complex biological systems. His leadership and vision led to the establishment of the Computer-Aided Drug Design Center, and his collaborations have led to numerous new experimental therapeutic candidates.
The Grollman-Glick Professorship was established to honor the memory of Mrs. Evelyn Grollman-Glick and her brother, Dr. Ellis Grollman, a 1926 graduate of the School of Pharmacy. The terms of the professorship mandate that it “…shall be held by a member of the School of Pharmacy faculty who is an active, well-recognized biomedical researcher in the pharmaceutical or related basic sciences.” MacKerell, a resident of Baltimore, has an outstanding record of exemplary research accomplishments, and in 2006 was named the 2006 Maryland Chemist of the Year by the American Chemical Society Maryland Section
